Note Both the concept of breaking apart the 32-bit address to locate a byte of data and the process of swapping pages of memory in and out of physical memory using a paging file are not difficult ideas to understand. However, there is one more little thing you should know about this entire process. It is quite possible that the page directory for the process, the page table to which it points, and the actual page frame are all swapped out to the page file. Thus, when the processor executes an instruction that references a virtual memory address where this condition exists, it will take three page faults to locate the actual data: one to page in the page directory, one to page in the page table, and one to page in the page frame that holds the data location pointed to by the address!
This is because Windows XP also uses a concept called prioritization, which grants some processes a higher priority when it comes to accessing the CPU. The Task Manager is granted a high priority so that it can be brought up no matter what other task is running. As you can see, by using the concept of threads when writing applications, it is possible to allow an application to run at a faster rate. Instead of having to wait on some outside event, a process can schedule a thread to wait, and then continue with other threads to perform other chores that do not depend on the event on which that thread is waiting.
Remember that this is virtual memory, not physical memory. Once the VMM has found the actual page frame, it uses the last 12 bits of the 32-bit address to locate the actual data byte in the page frame where the address points. Because the last part of the address is 12 bits long, it can be used to point to individual bytes in the page frame. These last 12 bits do not point to another page structure. They are an offset into the actual page of memory that contains user or application data. Thus, it is possible to address each byte in the page frame individually.
