Ordinary lives are treated with extraordinary attention and analysis not only because the writer is son, grandson, nephew, and cousin to his subjects but also because he has become an anthropologist.

Smith had promised it would be, all sewn up; I imagined a few crude stitches of thick thread in his flesh. At other moments, I saw his chest unsewn, open, flaps of skin hanging above bone, above muscle, partly dried in the air. These two images would alternate in my mind, an exhausting obsession that continued even after the cremation had taken place. It was not only the arrangement for the cremation that fell to me but the decision of what to do with the ashes as well. My mother did not seem to have any preferences in this matter.
